Old Mixes

I was going through stacks of old mix cd's and found this one, so I decided to digitize and share it with the 7 of you.

The Dude Turns 10!

When Amy came to visit me out in L.A. the first thing we did was drive to every Ralph's in Silverlake and take a photo in front of it. When my little brother has a day off he takes himself out to the bowling alley and drinks White Russians all day. It's impossible to deny the cult of The Big Lebowski, which turns 10 this year, so get your friends together, grab a Sam Elliot 'stache, a White Russian, a bowling ball, and your favorite bathrobe and hit the lanes. Seriously, abide dude... abide.

The Big Pink

I saw The Big Pink pop up on the NME new music radar a few months ago, "A Brief History of Love" has become my summer anthem. It sounds like Tommy James & The Shondells went into the woods and 'shroomed with The Stone Roses and The Jesus and Mary Chain, and they came out the other end with The Big Pink and bad case of the herp. You should go download "A Brief History of Love" right now.

Aaaaht

While we're on the subject of art and well, how subjective it is... I took a ride with my Mother today and she thinks Olafur Eliasson's waterfalls around New York City are "just spectacular". Yeah, I guess. To me it looks like a giant water main busted, but to each his own. A few years back I nearly fell off a bar stool when my friend said she went to The Gates and felt like she was going through a Hari Krishna car wash.

Giant Turd Rips Through Berne

This past Sunday, while sipping a 13 dollar (seriously, are you kidding me?!...For well vodka? 13 dollars.) vodka soda with Megs at a party in the Meatpacking District that mimicked Weho on a Sunday afternoon she leans in through the throngs of pinstriped Ralph Lauren oxford shirt pretty girls and inquired, "Did you get that e-mail I sent you about the giant turd?"

I thought she was kidding. Like, sitting there thinking to myself, no I never got the memo about the turds. "Are you referring to someone at the bar?"

"No. The giant turd that ripped through Berne."
"Switzerland?"
"Yes, Switzerland."

I finally checked my e-mail this morning and there it was, a giant turd...

The exhibit, entitled Complex Shit, is the size of a house. It has a safety system that is supposed to deflate it in bad weather, but it did not work on this occasion.

Juri Steiner, the director of the Paul Klee centre, in Berne, told AFP that a sudden gust of wind carried it 200 metres before it fell to the ground, breaking a window of the children's home. The accident happened on July 31, but the details only emerged yesterday.

200 meter turd dash... faster than Michael Phelps?

I'm late on this one, yes I know, but I couldn't resist.

I Challenge You To A Mix: Part 4

Greetings from the homeland. It's Monday and you know what that means, time for another round of I Challenge You To a Mix. This week is a little different; I wanted to do something for all the lads and lades that have so diligently e-mailed, commented, texted, tweeted and otherwise, sending in music suggestions. This one is for you. If you hate it well... you made it, but I hope you don't hate it. As cool as mixwit is, I couldn't find all of your tracks on there so I hope you'll follow the links to the bands and listen to them.

Lucie writes from Italy about a band named Negramaro, perhaps it's safe to call them the Coldplay of Italy. Mixwit doesn't have much on them but you should go check out the bands myspace page.

Kathrine is from Denmark but she loves French music and suggests Yelle.
She's so good and she has songs about love for women.... Check it out :-)

There are TONS of Yelle remixes floating around the interwebs, this lade is really kind of awesome.

Anwei is in a band called Seedis, the self-described 8 piece band that does everything from rock to hip-hop, jazz-reggae, r&b-funk, go-go to folk, has a documentary in the works and you can watch the trailer here. Unfortunately, nothing for this band on mixwit so you'll have to go directly to the website to listen.

Lelani from Los Angeles writes to us about The Monolators,

They're a husband and wife team with a couple regular guest players every now and then. They were actually my professors in college and tried to keep the band thing to their students on the down low but a few of us knew. They're style is indie/punk.

Kerry from Ireland called me a ledge, I hope that's a nice thing to say. She has a band called Calvin Party that she wants you to know about. They're signed to a label based in Liverpool and their first single is out this September entitled "8 Days".

Mary from Sweden loves Oh Laura (formerly Laura). I like them too, but again, mixwit only generated thirty second clips. Check out this link Mary included from Youtube

Maddie from San Fran wrote in about her band called Camp Out.

Beth hopes that you like Sick of Sara,

Sick of Sarah is an all chick band from Minneapolis who will pretty much, "rock your face."

Abby from Malaysia sent some local Malaysian indie artists; Reza Salleh , Yuna, Mia Palencia, Kokokaina (Malaysian Singer based in LA)

Hannah representing the UK dropped; Friendly Fires, Sam Beeton and Sam Issac on us.

Aunt Red wants you to hear a PDX band called Guidance Counselor.

And last but certainly not least,

Cap says, "Give Jóvenes y Sexys a go if you haven't already heard of them."

And that is that! Thank you for your kind e-mails, keep up the great work and see you in season 3!

Liz and I gave a shout out to our friends Natalia Zukerman and Rachel Cantu this week, we love them and so should you.

If you are in NYC, I'm DJ'ing with Chris Kent at Legion (790 Metropolitan Ave, Brooklyn, NY) this Thursday night from 11pm-4am. It's going to be trouble. Also, Holly Miranda (The Jealous Girlfriends) is doing a rare solo set at Zebulon, August 30th and it's not to be missed.

In Ear Shot

I'm sitting at this beach house listening to this song over and over again. I'm a babe by 12 years at least, I’m realizing that people still get up and read the physical newspaper. Over the last 48 hours I've given a Skype and Firefox tutorial (i.e. how to download, install, and run), a lecture on phone radiation and how to use a LED screen if you have long finger nails, and was wild and crazy when I drank three beers, smoked a j, and stayed up past 10:30. I think I'll head back to the city this afternoon; all this relaxing is making me stir crazy.

Back in the city tonight.

Department of Eagles had a rough edit of this song floating around the internet a while back. Beggars has a mastered version for download here. I'm in love, but then again I am in love with Daniel Rossen... well I mean, as much as I could be for a lady like me.

In Ear Park comes out on October 7th but you can pre-order it here and get a FREE 7"

Here is the press stuff from Beggars:

Department of Eagles features Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear and his friend Fred Nicolaus, plus additional help from two other members of Grizzly Bear, Chris Taylor and Chris Bear.

Daniel and Fred met in 2000 at NYU when forced to be roommates, and began making music together to pass the time during an uneventful spring semester. They collected samples and turned them into songs using computers and a microphone borrowed from their neighbor Chris Taylor (who, years later would become Daniel’s Grizzly Bear bandmate and DoE’s producer/engineer). The material they wrote during this time became their 2003 debut The Cold Nose, which brought them a small but enthusiastic audience and critical praise.

In 2004 Daniel joined Grizzly Bear, playing guitar, singing, and writing a good portion of their sophomore album, Yellow House not to mention extensive touring. Fred descended deeper into the square existence, holding down a number of jobs and opening a savings account.

Throughout all of this, the two continued writing together whenever possible, resulting in a new batch of songs that comprise In Ear Park, an album that took roughly four years to complete.

About how songs made it to this record, as opposed to a Grizzly Bear one, Daniel says "In Ear Park has been in the making in one form or another for several years now, on and off tour and after work. A lot of these songs felt way too personal to bring to Grizzly Bear-- there's a lot of childhood nostalgia and an emphasis on more concise songwriting. Fred and I had license to try some things that I could never get away with otherwise, but we still went for the lushness and and attention to sonic detail that Chris and I always want out of a recording. I'm excited. "

No. I'm not partial because we share an alma mater; I'm partial because it's just better.

Played.

Heading out to the Longer Island for some beachy time. Last night Ilsa told me that in the glow of my computer screen I looked like death warmed over or green, as it were.

I'm cooking up something special for our finale next week, and probably recording with Holly and Jaime Karate when I return. I'm trying to figure out a place to have the podcast permanently but I'm broke so until then it'll be like a secret roaming party.

What do you think of that Eno/Byrne album?

More soon.

Muthafunka Radio is NOT WORKING! Sorry guys. Should have a new host for the show soon.

Brooklyn is hot, and the Post Office on 9th Street still sucks... I'll take it.

Here are some of those links we talked about:

The Jealous Girlfriends
Holly Miranda
Tim Mislock
Tamara Micojons

David Byrne e-mailed me this morning and said...

Good Morning

Today (Monday here in NYC) the rest of the album Everything That Happens Will Happen Today is available in three different formats. Small, Large and Extra Large. There is no medium. Just kidding about the sizes - but the three versions part is true, plus there is artwork etc.

You can stream the rest of the songs or just go for what's behind the curtain at:

I hope you like the songs....

I think he may have e-mailed you too, you should check.

I know, I know nothing since Monday.

Recorded a podcast with Holly Miranda, Tim Mislock and Tamara Micojons last night. Gotta figure out where to host it but should be up by Monday... or there about. I've been in New York for 72 hours and I think I've slept maybe 12 of those. Good stuff on the horizon...

More soon.

We can't put anything past you kids.

Yeah, it sure was Tegan Quin on This Just Out! Pretty cool right? I mean, I think so. This show comes in on a wing and a prayer, so when we send e-mails out to our friends begging them to come down to the kitchen because otherwise it's just Liz and I waxing poetic, we thank our lucky stars that they;

A. Are in town.
B. Know that Liz is just going to "do her thing" on them.
C. Won't press charges.

So I have to give a heartfelt thank you to Tegan for being a solid, awesome friend on this one.

Our mix this week comes with our two featured bands Bound Stems and Telekinesis! and nestled in the creamy center are Tegan & Sara doing their thing on other peoples music, and other people doing their thing on Tegan & Sara's music. Catch my drift? Good, I knew I could count on you... I just knew it. Here is the mixwit, I'm red eyeing it to New York tomorrow night for another Victorian two month'er so this week I'll be in and out but stay tuned... I'm compulsive enough to do this anywhere and it's cheaper than you know what.

88 Beats About One Thing

While we were all glued to the TV watching the 2,008 drummers pound away on LED laced skins at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, about 88 drummers from all over gathered at the Williamsburg waterfront and the La Brea Tar pits for the 2008 88 Boadrum. This year they were conducted by Gang Gang Dance in New York, and selected by The Boredoms in Los Angeles. Check out the roster for NYC on the YouTube page, it's really effing incredible.

[Via Free Williamsburg]

I missed 7/7/7 last year and for the second, second, second year I feel like a total loser. 8/8/8 was also supposed to be like, the luckiest day ever. I wonder if anyone played throw a stone, hit a burner at this thing.

Sunday, August 10, 2008

What a shaft!

Rick and I are glued to the tube; we're flipping between NBC, MSNBC and any other station carrying the Olympics. As a result, I'm watching my news instead of reading it and in between men's water polo and boxing we discovered that Isaac Hayes passed away. So sad!

Dinner With The Band

I found this live performance that Pela recorded for Dinner With The Band, it's an awesome vlog that pairs cooking and music. Two of my favorite things. Their YouTube page describes the show as,

...a cooking show that breaks the mold - the perfect mash-up of indie music and edgy food for total entertainment. Chef Sam Mason has been raising the stakes in the culinary world for the last ten years. Now join him as he invites his favorite touring bands to dinner for an intimate evening of cooking, conversation and live performance. Part rocker, part chef, Mason creates "intellectual food" that stimulates the palate as well as the dialogue. Rock on.

In this episode, Chef Sam Mason makes Paella with Pela. Pela is a local NYC/BKLYN band that has a pretty substantial following, I love this song. It's like that track you'd hear in the coming of age American Graffitti-esque movie when the two nerdy protagonists finally make it to the party, crash it, destroy it and make a clean get away... or not.

In 6 days...

I'll be driving around Brooklyn with my lil'bro.

Hey lads and lades, I moved the mix over to my tumblr site if you want to listen to it there. I'm going to only post the mix challenges, so as to not confuse anyone.

I love your comments and suggestions, it's a great forum for discovering emerging music don't you think?

Ok, we've established that I am a total nerd... there, I said it.

Recording Radio Bronado downtown tonight, should be up sometime tomorrow.

Willy or Fanny

Eff you garbage trucks, I needed at least 3 more hours of sleep. Instead, I'm playing a round of Tranny or Grannie over at Vice. I'm sitting here singing to myself, Trannie or Grannie? Ones got a willie the others got a fanny... You'll know what I'm talking about in a minute when you can't stop singing it either.

Thank you DJ Buttafucco.
